The job these bots do

A leveling bot awards experience for activity and turns it into ranks, leaderboards and rewards. Post, and you climb; climb, and you get a role, a channel, or simply a visible place in a list.

The point is retention rather than play. A new member who reaches level 5 within three days is more likely to come back than one for whom nothing happened. And a server that ties permissions to levels has, as a side effect, an answer to the question of when somebody counts as a regular.

Features that actually matter

What earns points. Messages only? Time in voice? Reactions? A server that mostly talks needs voice XP, or the leaderboard describes a place that does not exist.

The cooldown between points. Every usable bot enforces one, typically a minute, during which further messages earn nothing. Without it, whoever types "a" fastest wins. Check whether the interval is configurable.

How role rewards stack. If level 10 grants a role and level 20 grants the next one, do you keep the first? Either answer is defensible, but you should be choosing it rather than discovering it.

Channel exclusions. Spam channels, bot channels and counting games must not award XP, or half your leaderboard relocates there. A bot without channel exclusions is unusable in this category.

Where the data lives. Ranks accumulate over months. Losing them because a bot shuts down annoys members more than almost anything else. Ask about exports before you commit.

Permissions worth checking

The bot needs Send Messages and Read Message History to observe activity at all, plus Manage Roles if levels grant roles. Image-based rank cards add Attach Files.

Manage Roles is the only sensitive one here. The bot can only assign roles positioned below its own, so place its role just above the highest reward role and no further.

It does not need Moderate Members, Manage Messages, Manage Channels or Administrator. A leveling bot with Administrator is a warning sign precisely because the feature asks for so little.

Where server owners go wrong

The first mistake is confusing activity with contribution. Levels tied purely to message count reward volume, not value. Voice XP, weighted channels and a visible cooldown push back against that.

The second is levelling up too quickly. Someone who reaches the top rank in a week has no reason to continue. A curve that stretches as it rises lasts longer.

The third is rewards nobody wants. A role in a different colour is an incentive; a channel nobody visits is not. Ask your members what would mean something before defining twenty tiers.
