What giveaway bots are for

A giveaway bot collects entrants, draws a winner and announces the result. Its value is that it takes over the dull part: counting, watching the clock, and checking that everyone actually met the conditions.

Servers use them for two very different things. One is a real giveaway with a prize someone paid for. The other is growth: entry only if you join, only with a role, only after a number of messages. The same bots do both; what differs is the rules you set.

How to spot a good one

It can check requirements. At minimum: required role, excluded role, minimum account age, minimum time in the server. Without those filters an account created ten minutes ago wins on a regular basis.

It draws transparently. A good bot states the entrant count, the draw time, and lets you reroll if the winner never claims. Without that, every draw puts your credibility up for debate.

It keeps its own deadline. Giveaways that need a manual ending eventually run three days long. Check that the bot survives a restart and still ends on time.

It understands multiple winners. Three prizes is one giveaway with three draws, not the same giveaway three times.

Permissions and the legal part

Technically very little is needed: Send Messages, Read Message History, Add Reactions for reaction entry, Use External Emoji. Role-based conditions need View Roles, not Manage Roles. Administrator is never justifiable here.

More important than permissions is the part people skip. A giveaway with a real prize is regulated in most of Europe: published terms, age limits for certain prizes, no requiring a purchase. Charging for entry can turn the whole thing into gambling, which needs a licence.

Where people go wrong

The first mistake is running one without conditions. With no minimum account age, alt accounts win, and reliably so, because some people automate exactly that.

The second is the unverified prize. Nitro codes from an unclear source are the most common way a server accidentally spreads a scam.

The third is drawing quietly. If only the winner sees the result, half the server concludes there was never a draw. Post it where the giveaway was.

What a giveaway actually gets you

The influx is real, but it is not what people take it for. Someone who joins for a prize rarely stays for the server, and the share still posting two weeks later is small. That is not an argument against giveaways, it is an argument against the wrong expectation.

What they do well: get an existing server moving. A prize that requires a week of activity brings conversation back to channels that had gone quiet. A prize tied to attending an event fills the event.

What they do badly: fill an empty server. Twenty accounts that join for a Nitro code and never speak again look good in the member count and change nothing. Growth needs a reason to stay; the giveaway is at best the reason to arrive.

So set the deadline such that something has to happen between joining and drawing. Someone who reads along for a week has seen the server. Someone who joins two minutes before the draw has pressed a button.
