This list comes with history. In 2021 the two best-known Discord music bots shut down after Google sent cease-and-desist notices. Since then the most important question about a music bot has not been what it can do, but where it gets the audio.
Bots that resolve YouTube links are convenient and exposed. Bots using official interfaces or their own licensed catalogues last longer. That is not a detail for lawyers — it decides whether your server still has music in six months.
After that come the everyday questions. Who may skip, and does it take a vote? What happens to the queue when the last human leaves the channel? How does it sound at peak time — free offerings often run on saturated hardware, and stuttering appears in no feature list.
Music is also the category with the sharpest free-versus-paid divide. Audio filters, saved playlists, 24/7 presence and higher bitrate sit behind a paywall almost everywhere. Check before your server gets used to them.
