The best bots for self-assignable roles

Self-assignable roles are the feature that takes weight off a server fastest. Instead of somebody on your team working through a hundred requests, members press a button themselves — for notifications, interests, time zones, pronouns, games.

There is a clear dividing line when choosing, and it runs between old and new. Reaction roles were the standard for years: react to a message with an emoji, receive a role. They still work, but they need more permissions, they break when an emoji leaves the server, and on mobile they are cluttered. Buttons and select menus have existed since 2021, need fewer permissions, and look the same everywhere. A bot still built on reactions in 2026 is not being maintained.

Beyond that: groups with rules — exactly one role from this group, any number from that one. A confirmation only the clicking member sees, or everyone clicks three times. And the ability to edit an existing menu rather than spawning a new message on every change.

The most common mistake in this category has nothing to do with the bot: its role sits below the roles it is supposed to grant. Discord does not allow that, and nearly every error message here comes from exactly that.
