What AI bots actually do on a server

An AI bot passes what someone writes to a language model and posts the answer back. Whether that turns into a toy or a tool depends almost entirely on how tightly you scope it: a bot that answers anywhere is entertainment. A bot that knows your rules and only speaks in one channel does work.

The common uses are a short list. Questions and answers in a dedicated channel. Summaries of long threads. Translation between members who share no language. Image generation. And increasingly, moderation support that sorts posts before a human sees them.

How to spot a good one

It has its own channel. An AI bot that listens everywhere and replies to every mention makes every channel unusable. Check that responses can be limited to specific channels.

It has a visible quota. Every answer costs the developer money. A bot without a stated limit either has a hidden one (which you discover mid-conversation) or it is funded some other way, and you should know how.

It names its model. Not out of curiosity: the model and the provider decide where your members' messages go and how long they stay there.

It can be switched off. Per channel, per role, server-wide. A bot with no kill switch turns a single abuse incident into your problem.

Permissions and data

Technically these bots need very little: Send Messages, Read Message History, Attach Files for images, Create Threads if it moves conversations out of the main channel. Administrator is never required.

The real question is a different one. To answer, your server's text leaves Discord and goes to a model provider. For a bot that reads context, that includes messages from people who never addressed it. Settle three things before you invite one: who the provider is, how long requests are retained, and whether they are used for training.

If your members are in the EU this is not an academic point. Passing on personal data means being able to say who received it.

Where people go wrong

The first mistake is the unscoped bot. Let it answer everywhere and within a week you have a server where people talk to a machine instead of each other.

The second is using it as a moderator. AI can triage; it should not decide. An automatic ban over a sentence a model misread costs you a member and an argument.

The third is believing the headline. In this category, "unlimited" almost always means: until the developer sees the bill.
